Bernard Guillas on ’60s French cuisine

Marine Room chef talks about the legacy of Julia, Escoffier and seasonal eating

By Jenny Montgomery
Mad Men fans may still have the 1960s ditty “Zou Bisou Bisou” running through their heads. But it wasn’t just bits of frothy French music that captivated America in the 1960s. The boisterous Julia Child did kitchens everywhere a favor and made classic French techniques and menus accessible to American eaters.

Don’t fear the flan at Azafran

Humble Cuban eats in a romantic, ramshackle setting

Come summertime, I want food that’s lively, flavor-packed and cooked by someone else. I’d also like a mojito. Enter Azafran Cuban Restaurant.

Still searching for a decent breakfast

Longboarder Café has mediocre scrambles, tasty machaca

By Jenny Montgomery

This is no original or profound thought, but life is all about managing expectations. It’s also about realizing that, for some reason, most people have really low standards when it comes to breakfast restaurants. “Beware overhyped eggs” might be the next phrase I embroider on a pillow for my future Etsy shop. But I’ll get to breakfast shortly.

Hello to Santee’s Via Moto

Standouts include house-made mozzarella and a well-balanced panini

By Jenny Montgomery
I was pleased to discover the cavernous confines of Via Moto in Santee. The sprawl of Mission Gorge Road may not be the hippest of locales, but if you’re looking for something tasty that starts with the letter “p,” be it pizza, panini or pasta, this is the place in East County.

Go for the Oxtail Jam; stay for the confusing bathrooms

Pollos Maria elevates the humble taco shop

This Oceanside joint sits in that in-between spot between greasy cuchara and classy sit-down restaurant

By Jenny Montgomery
Pollos Maria in Oceanside is trying to be more than just a place serving up greasy, overdone Mexican favorites. Its specialty is broiled chicken, and the folks there have kindly installed a large, plate-glass window looking onto the grill, through which you can watch the master broiler (my term).
