Robin Sparkles may prefer the mall, and who can blame her. Forever 21 and Hot Dog on a Stick are fine institutions. However, we try to support local businesses and designers who are working hard to craft unique pieces for your home and self. And, really, finding, say, great vintage at the mall is extremely unlikely. Here are a few shopping events happening around town this week to get your closet looking fresh to death.
From now through Aug. 15, South Park's Junc Life & Style Boutique (2209 Fern St.) is having a super-mega-blowout-clearance sale. No, they're not selling used cars, though I can see how using "super mega blowout" can lead one to believe that. They're making room for all the cool new fall collections they'll have in store by putting their spring and summer clothing on sale at 20-percent off as well as accessories, gifts and other knick-knacks. They'll also have furniture for up to 50-percent off. If you've stopped by the hip shop, you know that these are great bargains for cool pieces that range from locally designed to vintage. If you're a Junc virgin, now would be a good time to get acquainted. Besides, summer and spring clothes are wearable in San Diego pretty much all year 'round. Bonus: Check in to Junc on Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Foursquare or Google Places anytime between now and Aug. 31 and receive 20-percent off any item. They just keep on giving.
Birdrock Arts is hosting a Shabby Chic Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, where vendors will be selling everything from vintage clothes and jewelry to paintings and home furniture that all have a touch of that shabby-chic style. Cute shabby chic goods are tough to come by, so this is a great chance to doll up your place. Some of those slated to sell their wares are EA Vintage, Wired Redhead Jewelry and Treasurette Girl. The event will also feature French music and mimosas, which are basically girl kryptonite. It happens at 5785 La Jolla Blvd. in La Jolla.
I've heard stories about designer sample sales in New York City where wannabe Carrie Bradshaws foam at the mouth over Prada shoes and are willing to knock over old women and blind children to get to them first. On Thursday, Aug. 9, Horton Plaza will host the Fashion Bash sample sale where hopefully no one will get trampled to death. This is the perfect event for someone who considers herself a "fashionista," a term that makes bile rise up into my mouth. But with free cocktails, spa treatments and big sales on apparel and accessories, it really is a fashionistas wet dream. It goes from 5 to 10 p.m. and tickets are $10 to $20. The extra $10 gets you a tote bag, cocktail samples, treatments and goodies—so I say, pay the extra. Shopping is more fun when you're a little bit drunk and getting a foot rub. This is a 21-and-up event.
