Cocktails, craft beer, coffee and more

Our weekly food-news round-up

By CityBeat Staff
URBN swizzle URBN Swizzle
Is The Swizzle the new summer craft-cocktail? Recently, Starlite put its Blueberry Swizzle (rum, moscato, blueberries, lemon and mint) back on the menu and, starting Thursday, July 12, URBN in North Park is rolling out its Summer Swizzle Series, highlighting takes on the rum-based cocktail that has its origins in the 1930s. First up is the Traditional Rum Swizzle (rum, falernum, lemon, orange, pineapple gomme and bitters). There'll be a new swizzle on the menu, for $7, Thursdays through Saturdays until Labor Day.

A few weeks back, we wrote about new University Heights spot Coffee + Tea Collective. The folks at the exquisitely designed shop feel they've got their beans in order enough to put on an official grand opening. Happening from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, stop by to try a cup of pour-over coffee (a slow-brew method that's supposed to highlight the coffee's flavors better than traditional brewing). Also on-hand will be Hess Brewing—if you prefer adult beverages—and MIHO Gastrotruck will be serving up food. At 10 p.m., head a few doors down to Tiger! Tiger! for an after-party.

Craft-beer fests in San Diego tend to sell out faster than a David Hasslehoff concert in Berlin. So, grab your tickets now for the Beachside Craft Beer Festival happening from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Junior Seau Beach Amphitheater in Oceanside. The event's put on by Breakwater Brewing, which will be celebrating its fourth anniversary, and will feature beers from Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing, Pizza Port, Green Flash, Lost Abbey, Iron Fist and others, plus food and live music. Your $30 ticket gets you 10 four-ounce pours.

So, this is only tangentially food related, but still cool. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, Suzie's Farm is opening up its flower field. Bring your own shears (or a few pairs will be provided, though you might have to wait your turn to use them) and clip a bouquet or two or three. Pricing will be based on the size of the bouquet and there will be samples on display so can see what costs what.
