Peed gains ground on Kreep

Absentee and provisional ballots could be key to keeping birther off the judicial bench

Who would've thought the race we'd be watching closest as the election results trickle in would be something so far down the ballot as superior court judge?

But, here we are, nail-biting, as Gary Kreep, a right-wing attorney best known for defending the Minutemen and challenging Barack Obama's birth certificate in court, gets very close to securing a seat on the bench. On Wednesday morning, the San Diego County Registrar of Voters had Kreep with a 56 vote lead over Garland Peed, a longtime deputy district attorney, with 135,000 absentee and provisional ballots left to count.

This evening the tides turned: We've got new numbers that give Peed a 154-vote advantage over Kreep, with 108,000 ballots left to count. The next batch of results will be available on Friday, June 8, at 5 p.m.

For more background on Kreep, whom the San Diego County Bar Association rated as "lacking qualifications," check out our previous post detailing his legal crusades.
