Sleeping People set up West Coast shows

Math-rockers also planning to release a new 12-inch record

Emerging from an extended hiatus, local math-rock greats Sleeping People are getting back together to play a series of West Coast shows in August.

The last time the quartet performed was in 2009. While bassist Kenseth Thibideau and Brandon Relf have continued to collaborate under the name Kenseth and Brandon, guitarist Kasey Boekholt has been living in San Francisco and guitarist Joileah "Joi" Maddock has gone off to Switzerland. One-time member Amber Coffman, meanwhile, recently collaborated with Major Lazer.

In an email, Thibideau says the original quartet of Thibideau, Relf, Boekholt and Maddock have set up shows because Maddock's coming back to American shores for a visit. The band also plans to release a 12-inch record with two previously unreleased songs, but it's anyone's guess whether or not they'll continue playing together regularly after the August shows.

"The band really seems to require physical practice with each other, something that can't be done from around the world quite yet. So, since Joi is coming back for a visit, we are taking advantage of that time," Thibideau says. "If we relearn all the old material and have time to work on new stuff, that would be amazing. But I don't [see] that happening.

"However," he adds, "this might spark new creative fire and we could start coming up with new ideas for future get-togethers." (Let's hope so!)

Sleeping People plays with Devfits (Rob Crow's Misfits-Devo mashup project) and Kata at Soda Bar on Friday, August 10. And they'll play at The Smell in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 9. Expect a Bay Area show to be added some time that weekend, too.

Check out some videos of the band rocking out below.
