Woody Woodrum's crappy rap and dubious endorsements

Write-in mayoral candidate says he's got the support of Duncan Hunter and co-founder of Apple

Donna Frye proved in 2004 that a write-in candidacy can be effective. Of course, history shows that she lost the mayor's race due to San Diego voters' inability to spell and bubble, but she did pull in a plurality of voters.

Arch-conservative Woody Woodrum has launched his own write-in candidacy for 2012, giving the Christian-right someone to vote for in the mayoral election, since everyone else in the race is either gay or vocally gay-friendly. He's president of the Eagle Forum of San Diego, a group that presents itself as pro-life, anti-gay and anti-Islam, and he's also active in the Tea Party movement. He's using a woody station-wagon as a campaign mascot and asking voters to compare his "normal" candidacy to his "abnormal" opponents.

Woodrum seems to be building momentum, claiming some major endorsements, including former member of Congress and presidential candidate Duncan Hunter, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, anti-gay-marriage attorney Charles LiMandri, Donald Trump's son and elephant-hunter Eric Trump and Dave Hester, that guy from the TV show Storage Wars.

Obviously we're skeptical about these endorsements, especially since most of them have given the same verbatim quote, "If I lived in San Diego, I'd write in Woody Woodrum for Mayor of San Diego." LiMandri, as we noted earlier this week, is actually backing Carl DeMaio's candidacy. We've contacted Wozniak's publicist and a consultant working for Hunter's anti-Obama Super PAC, but we haven't heard back. Woodrum hasn't respond to our emails, either.

Beyond a chronic case of intolerance, Woodrum has one thing the other candidates don't—a rap song (hit play above). Written and performed by Justen Charters, a conservative activist who also recorded the hip-hop track, "Obama, I Want Back My Change," the Woodrum for Mayor rap goes like this:

San Diegans we ain't giving up without fight
Woody Woodrum For The Mayor, San Diego Get It Right
It’s Time To Rise Up, he's not about the hype
Woody Woodrum The Mayor, San Diego Get It Right
Stand for America and the sanctity of life
Woody Woodrum For The Mayor, San Diego Get It Right
Write in Woodrum On Your Ballot,  ‘cause Victory Is In Sight

Woody Woodrum for the Mayor, San Diego it is time
To stop spending cash on the taxpayer's dime
Woody knows that and what really has in mind
Is to lead from the front, not lead from behind
Out of all the picks he's the only contender
Who will serve the needs of the people and not an agenda
He wants to balance budgets, cause he's not a big spender
When it comes to Lady Liberty, believe he'll defend her
His mission is simple, We The People Wake Up
Spend cash you don't have, and you'll go bankrupt
So you're tired of abnormal, SD you'd had enough
Want a guy who gets it done, even if the job is tough
Woody's commitment is high, he doesn't do lazy
21 years he served in the Navy
35 years married to the same lady
Our city needs a 360, not a 180

Chorus
San Diegans we ain't giving up without fight
Woody Woodrum For The Mayor, San Diego Get It Right
It’s Time To Rise Up, he's not about the hype
Woody Woodrum The Mayor San Diego Get It Right
Stand for America and the sanctity of life
Woody Woodrum For The Mayor, San Diego It Right
Write in Woodrum On Your Ballot,  cause Victory Is In Sight

Woody Woodrum for the Mayor, he represents you
And he's not ashamed, of red, white or blue
He believes that the framers really stayed true
To the American Dream, that dream we pursue
A government that does least, usually does best
Lower taxes means more money in your check
When its easier to pay bills, yeah your less stressed
And life at home is much more blessed
So its time to rise up and support the resolution
Of picking candidates who support the Constitution
Woody doesn't talk problems, he talks of solutions
Wood to your mutha.
