If you don't have a high-definition flat-screen TV, or you suck at making guacamole and cheese dip, maybe your best bet is watching the big game at one of San Diego's fine drinking establishments. We've rounded up 11 spots where you can take in the Super Bowl this Sunday:
Sneak Joint (3844 Mission Blvd., Mission Beach)
Pregame with a kegs-and-eggs tailgate buffet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. before the Super Bowl Bash. Beer specials start at 3:30 p.m., plus you can take advantage of raffles and giveaways during every time out and quarter and the third-annual half-time “heats up” hot wings eating contest. Sounds messy.
Gaslamp Tavern (868 Fifth Ave., Downtown)
This bar says they'll go the extra mile to accommodate any sports fan. For some TLC during the Super Bowl, Gaslamp Tavern has 12 flat screens and a big, open-air space in which to watch the game. The spot's offering drink specials all day and night and no cover.
San Diego Brewing Company (10450 Friars Road, Mission Valley)
With surround-sound, there's not a bad seat in the house. In honor of Super Bowl Sunday, there'll be food and drink specials, fun shwag and a raffle.
Firehouse (722 Grand Ave., Pacific Beach)
This beach-side bar's Annual Super Bowl Block Party starts at 2:30 p.m. with live entertainment, drinking games, a football toss and music by DJ Carlo. See the action on their JumboTron, with stadium seating. Then walk, run or stagger through the half-time 40-yard-dash foot race. Costumes encouraged.
The Ruby Room (1271 University Ave., Hillcrest)
The Ruby Room is a local dive-bar favorite with a 100-inch projection screen to catch the game. Super Bowl drink specials start at 2 p.m. And there's an after party at 7 p.m. with Undead Garden, Shrewd Lucy and Trusting Havoc.
Dirty Bird’s (4656 Mission Blvd., Pacific Beach)
Yes, they’re having a Super Bowl party, too. But Dirty Bird’s also has over 20 flavors of wings. Barbecue, maple, taco and hot honey mustard, to name a few. In the spirit of the game, this bar will have Super Bowl Squares, with a chance to win something at the end of each quarter. There will also be $2 Fireballs at the last two minutes of each half.
McGregor’s Grille and Ale House (10475 San Diego Mission Road, Mission Valley)
This Irish pub has Sunday Game Day beer and breakfast specials. Watch the game on one of the 12 new high-definition TVs, or shoot pool and play shuffleboard.
Tap Room (1269 Garnet Ave., Pacific Beach)
Ten HD projectors, 10 flat screens, 50 taps and no cover. Tap Room is kicking off this Sunday bright and early at 10 a.m. with a breakfast tailgate. They'll have beer specials, 100-square pools, contests and giveaways.
