San Diego Police Department is spending an average of almost $57,000 per day to keep an eye on Occupy San Diego, a total of $2.4 million since Oct. 7, according to a San Diego Police Department spokesperson. However, most of that would've been spent anyway; only $144,000 is actually new overtime pay.
Additionally, as of November 7, the San Diego Park and Recreation Department has spent almost $5,000 to support the police department, though only $3,800 was new spending that would not otherwise have been incurred.
The text of the email from SDPD is below, followed by the Park & Rec cost breakdown, which we obtained through a public-records request.
Subject: FW: Occupy San Diego- SDPD Costs
Many of you have been asking about the “Occupy San Diego ” costs to the SDPD.
Since the “Occupy” movement began on October 7, 2011, the San Diego Police Department has spent just over $2.4 million to maintain order and safety at the demonstration sites.
That figure includes $143,918 in overtime expenditures. The remaining $2,263,663 was the personnel costs for on-duty personnel that have been redeployed from their regular assignments throughout the City. This redeployment has been in the form of every division supplying 1-3 officers every shift, every day, taking them away from the neighborhoods they are assigned to serve. The redeployment also includes administrative and investigative personnel who have been taken away from their caseloads to work at the ”Occupy” sites.
The average cost per day is $56,876. (20 officers for 10 hours each for shifts= $50,454. 2 sergeants for 10 hours each for 3 shifts = $6,422)
These figures are for the personnel expenses of the police officers, sergeants and lieutenants that have worked the “Occupy” assignments. The countless hours spent by chiefs and the Central Division captain are not included in these figures.
Personnel from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department assisted with the sweeps conducted on 11-28-11 and 11-16-11. The costs associated with SDSO personnel are not included in these figures.
Thank you,

I also have the numbers for Parks & Recreation up until Nov. 7:
The following are the estimated costs expended by the Park and Recreation Department in support of the Police Department during Occupy San Diego. All staff were on normal work hours so the power washing is the real "net cost" of our effort.
1. Children's Park Support
1.0 District Manager = 2 hours x $55.41 = $110.82
1.0 Grounds Maintenance Manager = 2.5 hours x $45.93 = $114.25
4.0 Grounds Maintenance Worker II = 2.5 hours x 4 GMW x $27.82 = $278.20
TOTAL Children's Park cost = $503.27
2. Concourse Support and power washing
1.0 District Manager = 2 hours x $55.41 = $110.82
8 hours power washing = $3,800
TOTAL Concourse Cost = $3,910.82
3. Balboa Park
1 District Manager = 3.5 hours x $55.41 = $189.35
1 District Manager = 1.5 hours x $55.41 = $83.12
1 Grounds Maintenance Manager: 1 hour x $45.93 = $45.93
1 Senior Park Ranger = 1.5 hours x $85 = $127.50
TOTAL Balboa Park Cost = $445.90
GRAND TOTAL = $4,859.99
Note: The Balboa Park part was in a second document and formatted a little differently. I edited it to conform with the entries for the Children's Park and the Concourse.
