South Park art gallery explained

Kinsee Morlan: Why start an art gallery now when the world seems to be in an economic tailspin?

Jfre Coad: simply put, this venture is about sharing and community building first and foremost (of course work will be for sale) but we are trying to do our small part to make san diego a more livable & viable (maybe even just survivable!) 'city' for creative and cultural types. trying to keep the gravity up so not all artistically inclined individuals need to move away to pursue their lives as interesting, sensitive, thinking people. its worth a try!! i know i need it personally, so it certainly isn't selfless!! and i don't think hopeless or i would have left again for greener shores this fall..

Jason Soares: The best art comes in tough times. President Reagan inadvertently started lots of good punk bands!


KM: Aside from art by unknowns and esoterics, what kind of work are you looking for? Paintings? Sculpture? Installation? Sound? Or all of the above?

JC: part of the appeal of being a 'gallery owner' was not knowing what or who or how it would (& will) unfold exactly!!! we are open to any local work that fits the mindset and seems suited to our particular parameters; we have a very limited space and a quarterly openings schedule, so figuring out how to use these limitations to an artists and our own advantage is part of the fun. for me anyway! if anyone has any particular curatorial ideas or concepts id love to hear about them. im not saying everything will fly but i certainly want to be there for any mutually beneficial & meeting of the minds type situations! and talking things out critically can often help them into fruition; wherever & whatever that may eventually be. :)

JS: Everything is open for thought. We will have a constant window display featuring a revolving show of art. I hope we can put it to good use and give the area something interesting to see in their lives.


KM: 30th Street is blowing up these days. Did you know you wanted to be on 30th or was this a lucky find?

JC: this was a lucky find. i guess i was imaging something in the east village or north park or something, but jason soares (co-founder) found this tiny little storefront in south park and i thought well, maybe having it in
a place where there are lots of neighborhood folks about regularly and, that is still centrally located for other people who wanna come by on their way to something somewhere else, might workout even better!

JS: Yes it was a lucky find. I think its perfectly located and will hopefully bring the ends of south park a bit closer.


KM: Anything you want to add?

JC: think globally, art locally!

JS: I feel the gallery space in an extension of me and JFRE working with each other in aspects of physics. We are always trying to push what we do creatively as a band / performance / art collective and this is another endeavor.
Also It opens up more ideas in a public realm.
