From a Frank Sinatra musical to improvised dance

This week's Red List

Digable to-do

The Chairman of the Board's hitting the stage again. No, this isn’t a Weekend at Bernie’s kind of thing. Legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp is bringing Frank Sinatra back to life with the Broadway musical Come Fly Away. In the show, dancers perform Tharp’s choreography while a live big band plays classics like “My Way,” “New York, New York” and “Witchcraft” over Sinatra's actual vocal recordings. Through the music and dance, the performance tells the story of four couples who fall in and out of love. Performances run from Tuesday, Nov. 8, through Sunday, Nov. 13, at the San Diego Civic Theatre (1100 Third Ave., Downtown). Tickets start at $20. For show times, click here.

Digable dance

Choreographers and dancers Liam Clancy and Alicia Peterson Baskel have kicked off an intimate, experimental performance series called Collision. The name refers to the fact that some of the dancers might be meeting for the first time at the performance itself. Minutes after meeting, they'll engage in a completely improvised dance piece in a setting Clancy describes as more of a casual, conversational party than a traditional performance. Find out what happens when two people improvise side-by-side from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Expressive Arts, located at 32nd and Thorn streets in North Park. Since this is an underground performance, instead of money, bring food and/or drinks to share.

 Digable music

sacraprofanaTwo weeks after successfully completing a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to record their debut CD, the 24-member choral group SACRA/PROFANA will perform three works by contemporary composers at  Founders Chapel on the University of San Diego campus at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13. Led by Krishan Oberoi, the group embarks on its third season with interpretations of “Expecting the Main Things from You,” a 2005 work by New York-based composer Nico Muhly. Muhly says on his blog that three quarters of the singers will be singing a “stylized Morse code” that was inspired by watching satellites pass over his native Vermont. The performance will also include works by Estonian composer Arvo Prt and minimalist innovator Steve Reich. $12. Click here for more info.

Digable shopping

plushMostly gone are the days of jog-a-thons and candy-bar sales to help schools raise money, Increasingly cropping up in their place are more community-centric events that draw in folks beyond the school's ecosphere. On Sunday, Nov. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Glashaus studios (1815 Main St. in Barrio Logan), the Museum School, a public charter school, puts on the Local Color indie craft fair. Vendors include Boy Girl Party, Colleen Townend, Tend, Penny Sparkle Designs, Progress and Post Box Press (pictured here are plush pals from Val's Art Studio). MIHO Gastrotruck will be on hand selling food, DJ Claire will be spinning tunes and you can get your photo taken in Jen Jansen's vintage photo booth. Admission is free and proceeds from sales benefit the school.
