Boredom sometimes leads to magical things.

A few years ago, while my hubby and I were living in Tijuana, Mexico, we had nothing to do one Sunday afternoon so we toyed with the idea of driving to Tecate on the off chance author Daniel Reveles would be sitting at Bar Diana, his favorite watering hole.

Bar Diana makes several appearances in the Tecate-based author's books. The small dive bar even graces the cover of Guacamole Dip, one of his famed collections of short stories. But we thought the actual chances of running into the guy were slim, at best.

We decided to drive to Tecate anyway and, just minutes after ordering our first margaritas and beer at Bar Diana, Reveles and some of his professor friends from San Diego City College walked through the door. We showered Reveles with compliments on his beautiful writing and reveled in the fact that, just as magical and mysterious things tend to happen in his short stories, our little encounter was quite serendipitous indeed.

Several cervezas and tequila shots later, we were officially good friends.  And we keep in touch with Reveles to this day (we'll be meeting him at Bar Diana again this Sunday).

Months ago, I headed down to one of our regular little rendezvous with Reveles at Bar Diana and I brought my trusty Marantz audio recorder with me. He was working on his first-ever novel (he has a real penchant for short stories, so the fact it's full-length is pretty cool) so we chatted about the book and he took me on a quick tour of his beloved Tecate plaza, a truly charming place that also serves as a backdrop in many of his stories.

The title of the new book and a few of the details Reveles mentions in the podcast may have been changed since the recording—he lost his entire first draft after a computer meltdown and was forced to start over from scratch—but, if you hit play, you'll get the gist of what the novel's about.

Love Potion will be released as an e-book for Kindle in November, so be on the lookout. I've read part of the first chapter and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest.
