You like surprises? Good, we've got one for you. Ready?
Anders Wright, our film editor, joins us for this week's To-Do List podcast. He kicks things off by telling you to spend your Thanksgiving Day watching a guy carve off his arm, preferably after, not before you carve your own turkey. Music editor Peter Holslin agrees, and thinks 127 Hours is the perfect holiday flick for you and the family.
But if watching a guy cut off his own arm to escape being trapped under a boulder isn't your cup of tea, how about celebrating the 10-year anniversary of a local cover-band project, Cover Me Badd? They play the Casbah Sunday, Nov. 28, and you can read more about the band in the Nov. 24 issue of CityBeat (link coming soon!).
Carissa Cassares, our events editor, holds her highly fashionable grounds and recommends avoiding the crowded malls this holiday-shopping season and instead heading to The New Children's Museum for a pop-up shopping event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27. She says something about "Softies," which sounds like the perfect present for grandma Margie, right?
And Anders, who impressed us with his radio voice, covered both sides of the intellectual spectrum by giving a nod to a foreign film called The Temptation of St. Tony and the highly anticipated release (decidedly, it's down to kids, hardcore nerds and Anders who were waiting with bated breath for this one) of the last, er, second-to-last Harry Potter flick. Anders says the foreign film is kind of like a Tom Waits album. You'll just have to push that little play button to hear how he justifies that claim.
Tobie Milford makes pretty music with his violin by using lots of loops. We'll have more on Tobie in this week's issue (link coming), but for now you can listen right here on good-old Myspace. Leave us a comment and let us know whether you agree with Mr. Holslin's descriptions and comparisons of the music. Tobie plays the Soda Bar Monday, Nov. 29.
Carissa is white, which may be why she likes the dude behind the Stuff People Like blog. Christian Lander, the Canadian ginger behind the pointing-out-of-the-obviousness (which is quite funny, by the way) has a new book out, Whiter Shades of Pale, and he'll be signing and discussing it next Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Warwick's in La Jolla.
Big thanks to the San Diego band, Tape Deck Mountain, which was kind enough to give us a brand-spanking new track from their forthcoming EP, Secret Serf. Now, push play and share the link with your buddies.
