Nicole Waszak

The artist behind the super baby on the cover of CityBeat this week

By Kinsee Morlan

Nicole Waszak’s “26 Months (Dress Up),” the art on the cover of this week's paper, is from a series of acrylic and oil paintings of her daughter, Nora.

“I’m captivated by her and tracking her growth,” Waszak said. “There’s always something that I try to add to the painting to pick up her interest at that age—a toy, an expression or her body movement—something that’s really expressive of her developmental stage…. So, it’s not just about her cute face; it’s about what she’s doing and what she’s into at the time.”

The painting on the cover was created for a Comic-Con-related show at ArtHatch (formerly Distinction) gallery in July—hence the super-hero mask. Waszak rents wall space at ArtHatch, and she’s got a show coming up at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Bar Basic (410 10th Ave. in East Village). In November and December, she’ll show her work at Filter in North Park (4096 30th St.). Visit nicolewaszak.com to see more of her work.
