Story outtake: Mike Zucchet on Kevin Faulconer

Zucchet recalls political rival coming to his defense

By David Rolland

When you spend six hours interviewing someone, the cutting-room floor is bound to be littered with interesting nuggets that didn’t make it into the story.

One of the nuggets that didn’t make it into my story about Mike Zucchet was something he said about current District 2 City Councilmember Kevin Faulconer.

In the 2002 primary election for City Council, Zucchet and Faulconer finish one-two respectively. Then, in November, Zucchet beat Faulconer to win the seat.

Zucchet told me that he remembers Faulconer coming to his defense after the FBI raided City Hall and accused Zucchet of corruption, suggesting that folks are innocent until proven guilty.

Zucchet said he’s “embarrassed to say” that if the situation were reversed and Faulconer were the council member in trouble, he might have launched a recall campaign.
“Just the fact that Kevin didn’t do any of that, I think says something about him.”
