Adrian Arancibia is a bad-ass. Seriously, the poet can recite the oral history of San Diego's spoken-word scene between the mid-90s and the early 2000s without missing a beat or breaking a sweat.
As a founding member of The Taco Shop Poets, handling a microphone and a captive audience is in his blood.
Press play and hear Arancibia read one of his poems, then stick around for a quick interview with the guy who, to this day, can be spotted pacing back and forth on the sidewalk in front of a coffee shop smoking one of his alloted five cigarettes a day, then darting back inside to scrawl something down in his journal.
Arancibia and other Taco Shop Poet members will be performing alongside the seminal punk band, Los Illegals, at 8 p.m. this Saturday, March 12, at El Comal, 3946 Illinois St. in North Park. It's Arancibia's 40th birthday, and you're invited.
This week's music was provided by Los Illegals. Friend 'em on Facebook if you like what you hear.
