Tennis, The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, Jail Weddings and more

By Peter Holslin
pat and alaina Tennis
PLAN A: Tennis, Lord Huron, Air Waves @ Tin Can Ale House. Check out our feature on this page to learn more about hubby-and-wife duo Tennis and their winsome, romantic indie-pop. PLAN B: The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus @ Mandeville Auditorium (UCSD). You can’t go wrong with works by Claude Debussy or experimental composer Phil Kline, but what I’m most looking forward to at this performance is the U.S. premiere of Iannis Xenakis’ Metastasis (alpha version), an eight-minute, highly conceptual orchestral piece inspired by the clattering din of war. You don’t know avant-garde until you’ve heard Xenakis. (There will also be a Sunday matinee at 1 p.m.) PLAN C: Jail Weddings, The Burning of Rome, Taming the Fox @ Soda Bar. I can’t stand the histrionic vocals of Jail Weddings’ lead singer, but I love their expansive, sweltering rock.
