Last week, the Centers for Disease Control reported that obesity rates among kids 2 to 5 years old have dropped 43 percent in the last decade. First Lady Michelle Obama said she was "thrilled" with the news—not surprising in light of the fact that she's led the Lets Move! Child Care program, which strives to change children’s eating and exercise habits.
On Sunday, March 23, San Diego chefs will come together to celebrate NHA’s 100-year anniversary and its innovative approaches to childhood nutrition and healthy communities. Chef Chad White (of Plancha Baja Med and Tijuana’s La Justina), who's participating in the event, said “the opportunity to share how easy it is to make and eat good-tasting, healthy food” is what led him to join in the celebration, which will include cooking demonstrations by White, Javier Plascencia of Tijuana’s Misión19 and Bonita’s Romesco, Bernard Guillas of the Marine Room, Andrew Spurgin of Andrew Spurgin Bespoke Event Styling & Menu Design and Deborah Scott of Cohn Restaurant Group.
Plascencia will be making beef filet and chile verde ceviche; Guillas is contributing a blue crab and red quinoa heart of palm salad; White’s dish will be a strawberry, pea and radish salad; and Spurgin will serve cauliflower soup with sheep-milk yogurt and Upland cress. There will also be food stations from food purveyors like Alchemy, Blind Burro and Suzie's Farm.
Spurgin’s motivation for participating in the event was simple: the thousands of underprivileged kids and elderly fed by NHA each week.
“I was dumbstruck by the sheer volume of quality healthy meals that NHA provides for our community in need,” he said. “It’s a joy for us all to lend a hand and help support such a great cause.”
The event will take place Sunday, March 23, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the NHA Central Kitchen (1929 Hancock St. in Middletown). Tickets are $55 for general admission, $100 for VIP.
