Let them eat PubCakes!

Beer you can chew

I've always been a fan of a well-executed beer pairing. I often attempt to do so with meals I’ve prepared and had some notable successes. But beer pairing doesn’t have to end there. I'm also keen on pairing it with parent /teacher conferences, grocery shopping and the majority of my lunch breaks at work. Honestly, with enough imagination (and a broad disregard for sobriety), beer can go with just about anything.


Misty Birchall clearly feels similarly (though hopefully not to the extent I've taken it). Since she first started baking with beer around five years ago, her similar obsession became manifest as PubCakes. These delightful cupcakes have been a sensation at nearly every brewfest I’ve attended, and their fans are legion.


Birchall has sold her delectable wares in multiple avenues over the years, but her latest venture seeks to finally democratize merging cake and beer. On Monday she initiated a kickstarter campaign to generate financial backing for production and distribution of PubCakes-branded Craft Beer Cake Mix. It funded in under a day. Man, this town loves it some carbs.


If you feel like you missed your chance to help Birchall become the next Betty Crocker (or, as I prefer, Betty Crunker) she has multiple stretch goals lined up. Upon reaching the $5,000 mark, she'll begin jarring her Coffee Stout Chocolate Sauce made with AleSmith Speedway Stout. You’d honestly have to hate yourself a little bit to not want that to come to fruition.
