Eden opening in San Diego

The new nightclub will feature boys on boxes, a pretty killer

The nightclub portion of Eden is opening in San Diego Tuesday, Jan. 11. The bones of the old Universal building are the same, but the new owners, chef Scotty Wagner and NightlifeSD's David Laurent, are hoping a few small changes make a big difference.

Read more about what you can expect from the new nightclub in the Nightgeist section of next week's CityBeat.

For now, a few small details to quell the intrepid scenester's curiosity:

* In the Eden entryway, look up for a gay take on a piece of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling painting. Eden plans on catering the Hillcrest's gay community more than Universal ever did. A spokesperson for Eden pointed out the three prominently placed go-go dancer poles in Eden and said, "Hillcrest is notorious for having boys on boxes."

* DJs will be joined by live performances in what the venue is calling the "E List Celeb Series." The less-than-B-list stars include former American Idol contestant Frenchie Davis, YouTube stars Jessica & Hunter and Real Housewives of Atlanta star, Kim Zolciak.

* Design-wise, the club has hired Ginger Niles who says the club will feature lots of "natural elements" like cork wall paper, fig-tree sculptures, tree-stump tables and more. There will be touches of finer, refined details like velvet and fabrics with French undertones.

* There will be a master-mixiology bar, so expect creative craft cocktails.
