Ellen Salk's multi-sensory art, Will Gustwiller's new chocolate factory and more goings-on

Our weekly roundup of cool San Diego goings-on

By CityBeat Staff

Digable art

Ellen Salk’s paintings are beautiful in their minimalism, managing to feel both constrained in their almost perfect balance, yet totally unconstrained, too. They're the type of works you could stare at for hours and never get bored. Opening with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, Salk displays her new works at the Oceanside Museum of Art (704 Pier View Way) in Synesthesia: Manifestations of Energy. The exhibition features a collaboration between Salk and sound artist Christopher Adler, who created a one-hour music loop to enhance the meditative quality of Salk's work. Admission to the reception is $10, or free if you're a museum member. The exhibition's on display through May 5.

Digable goods

Warby Parker was started in 2010 by four pals who believe that cool eyewear shouldn't be prohibitively expensive. They've succeeded in that mission, peddling hip specs that you can get for around $100 a pair, prescription included. Not only that, but for every pair of glasses sold, Warby Parker donates a pair to a needy person. The company's based in New York—and does most of its sales online—but on Saturday, Feb. 2, they'll be in San Diego for the Common Good Market. Stop by 1622 National Ave. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to try on Warby Parker frames and also shop wares from local vendors, including Aloha Sunday, Typewriter Boneyard, Sable & Snow, Therapie and Pigment. Get more info here.

Digable chocolate

It's been half a decade since Will Gustwiller opened his Eclipse Chocolat shop in North Park. On Saturday, Feb. 2, Gustwiller celebrates the grand opening of his new, much larger space at 2145 Fern St. in South Park. Festivities include tray-passed samples of new menu items from noon to 4 p.m.; a "build-a-[chocolate] bar" workshop, also from noon to 4 p.m.; a drawing for a year's supply of chocolate at 6 p.m.; and, if you're a fan of Oompa Loompas, there'll be a Charlie & the Chocolate Factory costume contest at 4 p.m. If you can't make it to the grand opening, plan to stop by soon to try Eclipse's new brunch menu, its craft beer bar with a rotating selection of eight local brews or, the best pairing of all, a glass of red wine and a piece of chocolate.

Digable tunes

The Museum of Making Music's (5790 Armada Drive in Carlsbad) Local Flavor Concert Series kicks off 2013 with the appropriately name Sounds Like San Diego!, happening at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Performers include Jack Tempchin, who wrote the Eagles' "Peaceful Easy Feeling"; Joey Harris, who played drums for Country Dick Montana and went on to play in The Beat Farmers; gifted singer / songwriter Marie Haddad; guitar-strumming dreamboat Josh Damigo and more. The musicians will be performing past hits penned by folks like Gary Puckett, The Cascades, Jason Mraz, The Zeros, Chris Hillman and Iron Butterfly. Your $20 admission ticket include beer from Stone Brewing and pies from Flippin Pizza and Knockout Pizza.
