For several years, Sicilian Thing in North Park has offered up slices of Barack-Oli-Ricotta pizza in honor of the president. But now, Obama faces a challenger.
"We've had the Barack Obama slice for awhile, so we decided to represent the other party," pizza-maker Cassandra Holbrook says. "So we made the Pepper-Romney Ricotta very white and cheesy."
While the Democratic slice was a vegetarian combination of broccoli and ricotta cheese, the Republican is meatier, with pepperoni and ricotta. Holbrook says that's not an editorial stance on the Republican nominee. They aren't fans of Romney; it was just the easiest play on words.
The Romney slice's tongue-in-cheek price tag reads: "$1.3 million/slice—tax exempt."
Four years after the historic 2008 election, the electoral map from Sicilian Thing's election-night party still hangs on the wall, with the states hand-colored in red and blue. Asked whether the shop supports Obama, Holbrook hesitated.
"We are liberal here," she says. "That doesn't necessarily mean we love Barack Obama."
