Fundraisers planned for Jeff Winterberg

Former local musician, photographer battling brain cancer

Fundraisers have been set up to support Jeff Winterberg, a well-known musician and photographer who's battling a rare form of brain cancer.

Though he hasn't lived in San Diego for years, Winterberg was a staple of the local indie-rock scene back in the early '90s, when he played guitar in the hardcore punk band Antioch Arrow and photographed iconic local bands like Drive Like Jehu and Clikatat Ikatowi. He collected many of his photos in his 2004 book, Rat-a-Tat-Tat Birds: Photographs by Jeff Winterberg, 1991-2003.

Winterberg was diagnosed with brain cancer late last year, and began rigorous treatments in February. In the months since, friends have rallied to his support, including setting up a donation page to help offset medical costs.

In San Diego, two fundraisers are planned for next week. North Park eatery Tiger!Tiger! will host an auction of art, photos and rare show flyers at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3. (See more info here.) Then, on Wednesday, Sept. 5, indie-rockers Three Mile Pilot will play a benefit show with Tit Wrench and Devfits at The Casbah.

Matt Lorenz, a friend of Winterberg's who's organizing the fundraisers, says he wants the events to reflect the do-it-yourself spirit of San Diego's old-school punk scene.

"Many of us met and became really good friends through that scene, so I thought, why not have a little event that celebrates that?" he says. "The response has been amazing, just in terms of people offering art to donate or resources or helping out to volunteer. Everybody wants to contribute in some way, shape or form."
