Perfect curry, perfect hot dogs and URBN hearts Hess

Our weekly food-news round-up

By CityBeat Staff
saffron Su-Mei Yu, making her green curry, perhaps?
Curry is to Thai (and Indian) food what a good mole is to Mexican food—a mysterious, complicated sauce that can make or break a restaurant. Saffron Thai's Su-Mei Yu obviously knows curry—Saffron's been around for two decades—and she's apparently totally down with teaching you her secret. From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, learn to make a perfect green curry from start to finish: Head over to Specialty Produce to learn how to select ingredients and then return to Su-Mei's private kitchen, located above Saffron, and learn how to prepare it. The class is limited to 10 people and the $100 per person cost includes all ingredients and lunch. Pre-registration is required: 619-574-0048 or info@saffronsandiego.com.

Last week, we wrote about Sea Rocket Bistro's beer-pairing dinner with Monkey Paw. On Sunday, Aug. 26, cider's the featured beverage. Huh? Wha? Cider? If you've never contemplated a food-and-cider pairing (the hard stuff, not the Christmas-y, cinnamon-stick stuff), give it a go, because the four-course menu looks mighty tasty. Start off with scallop carpaccio paired with Fox Barrel Ginger & Black Current Cider. Next up, melon salad with mint, berries and prosciutto paired with Crispin Honey Crisp Cider. Third, sous vide pork belly confit and Crispin Landsdowne Cider. Last up, a maple-glazed apple-cider donut plus Crispin The Saint, brewed with Belgian yeast & maple syrup. Supplies are limited, and reservations are strongly recommended. Get all the details here.

Hess Brewing's not yet moved into its new North Park digs (renovations are still underway), but it's not too early to get to know the neighbors. On Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6 p.m. until the stuff runs out, Urbn Pizza's teaming up with Hess for a limited-edition beer release—a whiskey-barrel-aged Imperial Stout, dubbed Torulus. Also that evening, you can order a tasting flight of Hess' Ex Umbris Imperial Stout, URBN’s house barrel of Elmer T. Lee Bourbon and, of course, Torulus, for $22. (And you'll get a commemorative snifter glass.) The event takes place at Urbn.

Stand & Deliver, the new project of Miho Gastrotruck, serves up damn-fine gourmet hot dogs. If you've not tried 'em, then you're life will never be complete. Seek one out at the Hess Brewing anniversary party (7955 Silverton Ave., #1201 in Miramar) on Aug. 25 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. or later that day at the Cypher City Kings b-boy battle from 7 to 10 p.m at 1037 J St., Downtown.
