Raise a glass for San Diego's watering-hole champions

You have it so easy. All you do is show up at the bar with your friends and drink. You chat. You laugh. You carry on. There’s no painstaking practice, no years of dedication to a craft. You bunch of slackers. You’re nothing compared with those hardy men and women who head to the bar bound and determined to win. For them, this is no game.

Well, actually, it kind of is. In this, the 2011 edition of our annual Bars & Clubs issue, we salute the wizards of the watering holes, the stars of the saloons, the conquerors of the canteens, the tops of the taverns. Along with our usual guide to 500 or so bars across San Diego County, we introduce you to a handful of champions who’ve risen to the pinnacle at the pubs in contests such as pinball, beer pong, goldfish racing, trivia, Street Fighter and craft-cocktail creating.

And, you, you inert lump, next time you’re sitting there, enjoying your beverage, and you see someone who’s in it to win it, struggling to beat all comers, raise your glass and toast their tenacity. It’s the least you can do.
