Back to the barrio: Local lore has it that Latent Print started with a late-night conversation between a filmmaker, a novelist, a poet, a writer and a designer. That was in 2009, and the indie online literature and arts journal has been cranking out interesting content and cool events ever since. At 6 p.m. Friday, July 15, the Latent Print crew will celebrate the Bosh Studio Opening at a new 2,100-square-foot art studio and gallery at 1878 Main St., Suite D, in Barrio Logan. Resident artist Michael Boshart will show his work alongside works by a few others. Then, at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 16, the Latent Printers will be a few doors down at Glashaus (1815 Main St.) for a night of music and illustration featuring the work of Alexander Jackson and Joseph Bowman. See, good things come from intense drink-and-chats at local bars. thelatentprint.com/events

Hit the snares: Summer nights in San Diego are a slice of heaven: Warm breezes  make perfect conditions for an evening stroll. Which, in turn, makes the South Park Walkabout a favorite summer activity. All the neighborhood shops and businesses stay open and offer refreshments and entertainment for visitors. The next Walkabout, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 16, will be extra-special since it coincides with an opening reception at The Next Door Gallery (2963 Beech St.). Snares: Selected Works by Peter J. Geise will feature pieces that highlight the self-taught artist’s eclectic, colorful style. The show runs through Aug. 31. southparkscene.com

Culture creator: Brigitte Taylor, aka Suite Brigitte, is an event planner and “creativity coach” who’s been putting together cool happy-hour events for about a year now. Her happenings are often a combination of art, music and culinary creations and take place in venues we rarely hear about. Check out Taylor’s next shindig from 8 p.m. to midnight Thursday, July 14, at Brewley’s Pint (1261 Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach). Artists Jami Goddess, Martin Nasim, Daniel Hardison and Tiffany Nakanishi will show their work, and you can sample the edible designs of bakery Sugar & Scribe. Taylor will be back at it from 6:30 to 9:30 Wednesday, July 20, at The Dragon’s Den (315 10th Ave. in East Village) with a Comic-Con preview party featuring illustrator Jen Fong and live art by Martin Nasim, Anna Zappoli, Daniel Hardison and Tiffany Nakanishi. suitebrigitte.com Gay days

Special Events

Of the 160 floats at this year’s San Diego LGBT Pride Parade, we’ll be screaming ourselves hoarse for the gay and straight active-duty military members who plan to march for perhaps the first time in U.S. history. The parade starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, in Hillcrest. Then, over at Balboa Park (around Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street), the Pride Fest runs from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 17, with three stages and a dance tent. Performances include old-school rappers Salt-N-Pepa and new-school rappers God-des & She, synth-pop rockers Shitting Glitter and post-punk thrashers Spare Parts for Broken Hearts. Tickets are $20 per day or $30 for both, with discounts for presale. sdpride.org

Tops of the tops: That big, fancy wedding in England last month? Those ladies had nothing on the hats you’ll see at Del Mar’s Opening Day, Wednesday, July 20, when the Truly Fabulous Hats Contest awards prizes ranging from cash to a diamond necklace in categories like Most Glamorous and Most Outrageous. The racetrack opens at 11:30 a.m., and the first race is at 2 p.m. There’s a “Newcomers Seminar” for betting newbies at 1 p.m. in the Plaza de Mexico. dmtc.com. Whether you’re planning to dress up for the races or just like funky hats, the Village Hat Shop’s annual pre-opening-day trunk show, this year featuring high-fashion hat designer Arturo Rios, takes place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at the shop’s Hillcrest location (3821 Fourth Ave.). villagehatshop.com

Books

Act right:If the thought of meeting your gay uncle’s new lover makes you feel awkward, it might be a good idea to stop by The Palm Restaurant (615 J St., Downtown) at 1 p.m. Friday, July 15, to hang out with author Steven Petrow. He’ll be there for a KPBS-sponsored luncheon to promote his new tome, Steven Petrow’s Complete Guide to Gay and Lesbian Manners, the first guide to properly interacting with the LGBT community. As a columnist for outlets such as The Advocate and Yahoo! Shine and the founder of gaymanners.com, Petrow’s been researching the subject for years; his groundbreaking work is shattering the closet walls. It’s $25 for food only or $37 for food and a signed copy of the book. kpbs.org.
