The Barbecue Barons have launched a catering gig. Helmed by top-notch barbecuers Melvin Jones and Stephen Reese, the southern barbecue catering truck offers tri-tip, spare ribs, pulled pork, baked mac-n-cheese, mac salad, sweet potato pie and other southern goodies. Nice guys: They recently donated dinner to the veterans staying at Veterans Village of San Diego’s temporary shelter in Point Loma. The catering menu can be found online at barbecuebarons.com.
Remember Bite, the small-plates restaurant on University Avenue in Hillcrest that closed last year? It’s still closed, but a food tour company by the same name (different people) will kick off at noon on Friday, Jan. 14. Combining food and history, the three-hour walking tour will stop at six locales (Indigo Grill, Currant, Royal India, Karl Strauss, The Glass Door and Café Zucchero) and cover roughly two miles, offering a chance to
play tourist Fridays and Saturdays at noon. The website says tickets
($39) must be purchased in advance. bitesandiego.com
You know Del Mar Rendezvous, that tasty Chinese restaurant in Del Mar Plaza? It has nothing in common with Gaslamp Rendezvous (551 J St.), a casual French bistro, bar and bakery that opened on New Year’s Eve. If sweet and pungent chicken appeals to you, head north. If, however, you want espresso, a stiff drink and a croissant, the Gaslamp it is.
