CityBeat's Great Demo Review

This week's music and nightlife news for locals only includes a call for local albums, a boost for Maren Parusel and more

By Peter Holslin

Attention musicians: CityBeat’s Great Demo Review, our annual critique of local music, is set to hit the streets on March 2, 2011—that’s right around the corner. Got a demo you’ve been passing around? A new album you’ve been hyping? A bedroom project nobody knows about?

Send us a recording and we’ll review it. We accept CDs, DVDs and LPs. Please include your project’s name, an e-mail address or phone number and your website, Bandcamp or MySpace page. You can mail submissions to CityBeat Demo Review, 3047 University Ave., Suite 202, San Diego, CA, 92104. The submission deadline is Jan. 31, 2010. Good luck!

Singer-songwriter Maren Parusel is about to see a major boost to her public profile. Her manager, Mario Escovedo, says a recording of her song “Days in Universe” will be used in Conception, a feature film starring David Arquette and Julie Bowen that’s currently in post-production. Other than that, she’s been keeping busy lately: She recently added drummer Eric Brozgold to her band, she’s preparing for her third appearance at Austin music festival South by Southwest next March and she’s set to release her latest album, Artificial Gardens, pro duced by Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins, early next year.

Hip-hopper Flow Dimaggio will perform at a benefit for Project: Donate, a Chula Vista-based nonprofit that donates stuffed animals to orphans in Tijuana, at Che Café on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Okay! Okay!, Parvulus, Pardon Moi, Francoise, Holytigress and Freely Omnes will also play.

Beatshop Allstars, Moment for Silence and two dozen other MCs and DJs will perform on Friday, Dec. 24, at the Pacific Beach Music Fest at 710 Beach Club, a day-long festival with donations going to the Salvation Army and other charities.

Afro-jazz group In Motion Trio 2 will celebrate the release of their new CD, The Barefoot Race,at Lestat’s on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
