A fight between Nortec Collective members

This week's music and nightlife news for locals only includes more on the rift between Pepe Mogt and Roberto Mendoza, a new album from The Tree Ring and more

By Peter Holslin
A rift in Tijuana Norteño-techno syndicate Nortec Collective went public last week when members exchanged recriminations via Twitter over an incident at the Tijuana international Airport. According to posts on SDDialedIn.com and NBC’s SoundDiego blog, Pepe Mogt (aka Fussible) alleged that Roberto Mendoza (aka Panoptico) sucker-punched him, sending him to the hospital for head injuries. Mendoza countered that Mogt’s staff attacked him during the fight and that he sustained a broken arm and fingers. Nortec duo Bostich Fussible cancelled a SoundDiego in-studio performance, but their show at The Casbah on Thursday, Dec. 2, will go on.

Americana mainstays The Tree Ring are getting ready to release their new album, Generous Shadows. They’ve finished the album artwork—the cover is an illustration of a verdant mountain landscape—and they’ve sent the record off to the vinyl-pressing plant. They’ll play a record-release show at the San Diego Woman’s Club on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Bubblegum-punk outfit Dum Dum Girls will put out a new EP via Sub Pop on March 1. The four-song EP, He Gets Me High, includes a cover of The Smiths classic “There is a Light that Never Goes Out.” The band will perform at The Casbah on Friday, Feb. 18, as part of a North American tour.

A new track by indie-rock trio Tape Deck Mountain has been making the rounds in the blogosphere. The track, “P.I.,” comes off the Secret Serf EP, which will be released on Jan. 11 by Lefse Records. You can listen to the track on City- Beat’s music blog, Check 1, Check 2.

Dustin Rhodes, The morning Glass and The Goomies will perform at The Park Gallery on Saturday, Dec. 4. Proceeds will go toward paying for equipment stolen during a recent break-in at the all-ages University Heights venue.

Correction: This article originally misspelled the name of Tape Deck Mountain's forthcoming EP. We regret the error.
