San Diego Beer Week = Beer benevolence

This week’s Nibbles presents a spread of ale, lager, pilsner, porter and stout, all consumed for a good cause (some even charitable)

Yes, kids, it’s San Diego Beer Week, with restaurants hither and thither extending themselves into the depths of beerdom for tastings and treats galore. Our out-of-sequence rundown beginith with Sea Rocket Bistro (3382 30th St., North Park), which giveth to the sudsy altar with events from Nov. 4 through 12. The $30 Cooking with Beer prix-fixe menu begins Nov. 5, spotlighting beer-braised, boiled, blanched and roasted tastiness capped with a pony pour of beer and a pubcake (beer cupcake). One to show up for: Nov. 8’s menu, paired with a 7 p.m. screening of Beer Wars, a documentary pitting the craft-beer industry against the big ol’ boys (Coors, Bud and Miller).

Because we writeth today in olde English, we acknowledge the sacrifice of those who came before us—human or otherwise. On Nov. 11, Jsix (616 J St., Downtown) and The Lost Abbey host the Sacrifice Dinner, replete with four whole-animal stations (crab and bass, pig, roasted goat, cow leg) and vegetarian dishes and sides, with a special batch of brew from Lost Abbey. Executive chef Christian Graves is a culinary crusader, wasting little by using the lot of the animal. From 6 to 9 p.m. $40.

Blind Lady Ale House (3416 Adams Ave., Normal Heights) taps into its brewsky know-how with the Brewmaster Series, Nov. 6 through 14, featuring brewmasters from local Green Flash to not-so-local Sierra Nevada. On Monday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m., get in on a five-course tasting menu paired with Québécoise Uni broue beers. Veg and vegan options are available. $65. On Sunday, Nov. 14, Allagash flights are all the rage, and 5 percent of the day’s totals go to San Diego Food Bank’s “Food 4 Kids” program.

On the topic of beneficial beer drinking, we giveth you Urban Solace’s (3823 30th St., North Park) first annual Walkabout of Beers. From 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, $40 gets you access to five food stations with three-ounce tastings of 10 craft beers. A portion of the proceeds go to San Diego Coastkeeper.

Alchemy (1503 30th St., South Park) will host a Hard Cider Pairing Dinner from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7. It’s four courses for $38, featuring local Julian Hard Apple Cider, among others. First course includes cider pumped through your veins intravenously while you consume a pear-cider-glazed scallop and buckwheat blini with creme fraiche and a sauce made from Julian apples (which, interestingly, are not used in Julian apple pie), paired with Fox Barrel Hard Cider.

Remember, in Heaven there is no beer (or so goes the old polka). That, my friends, is why we drink it here. So, bottom’s up before the Grim Reaper does his thing. For the full lineup of events, see
