“New York pretty much beat us up,” Tape Deck Mountain guitarist / singer Travis Trevisan says, adding that he got his guitar stolen, broke his glasses in half, nearly broke his nose and got his pedals damaged by Transportation Security Administration agents on the flight home.
Still, Tape Deck’s trip went well—they played to a packed house at a Pitchfork Media showcase, performed for booking agents and got some blog buzz.
Heavy Hawaii, meanwhile, played to a crowd at an Impose magazine showcase, sat down for a couple interviews and did lots of sightseeing. Unfortunately, on their second night in town, a big bald man randomly punched frontman Matt Barajas in the face as he was standing outside a burger joint in Manhattan. “He didn’t like my neon-color jacket or something,” Barajas says.

Daniel Delacruz, a saxophone player for Slightly Stoopid and a teacher for the local nonprofit A Reason To Survive (ARTS), is recovering after surgery last month to remove a softball-size brain tumor that had made him legally blind. Andy Erickson, ARTS’s events and marketing coordinator, says Delacruz’s vision is completely restored, and he’s playing concerts and surfing again. Members of Slightly Stoopid will play a benefit to help cover his medical bills at Bar Leucadian on Friday, Oct. 29. Mike Pinto, Tommy Dubs and Shoreline Rootz will also perform.
Roxy Jones will celebrate the release of their new full-length, Lullabies and Warcries, at Soda Bar on Thursday, Oct. 28.
Mrs. Magician mark the release of their new 7-inch at Soda Bar on Friday, Oct. 29.
