The Hungry Season is something of a coming-home party for T. Greenwood. After several years in Washington, D.C., the author has returned to San Diego. But her fictional protagonists have left San Diego for a much-needed summer vacation in Vermont. Sam Mason is a well-regarded writer who’s been suffering from impotence—both on the page and in the bedroom—since the death of his daughter, Franny. Her twin brother is drifting away in a cloud of marijuana smoke, and Sam’s wife is considering having an affair. Greenwood’s quirky characters are so vividly drawn that readers may have trouble believing they’re invented. But rest assured, unlike the novel’s protagonist, Greenwood doesn’t suffer from writer’s block: The Hungry Season, released earlier this year, is Greenwood’s fifth and most accomplished novel.
