Curtain call

A double bill at a refurbished and newly named theater in Hillcrest—plus all the other plays in production

By Martin Jones Westlin

Check This Out

To hell and back: If you think the old Compass Theatre was a disaster area, you’re on the money—except your account doesn’t take in the half of it (the place was loopy with faulty wiring, rampant filth backstage and, perhaps because the actors had no bathroom of their own, the odor of stale pee). But the scrappy folks at Ion Theatre Company, the venue’s new anchor tenant, are used to such obstacles, which is why they’re such a great fit for the place. They’ve renamed the venue BLK BOX @ 6th and Penn, and in an absolutely gargantuan effort, they’ve rebuilt the interior from top to bottom (I looked in a few days ago). It’ll all be worth the trouble when the troupe mounts the dark Eliot, a Soldier’s Fugue and the thriller Back of the Throat as an inaugural double bill. Ion’s rebuild is a giant step forward for the Hillcrest area and the opening salvo in the company’s plans for off-night programming—but, man, that new name needs work. Eliot, a Soldier’s Fugue and Back of the Throat open Saturday, March 20; the address is 3704 Sixth Ave. There’s a restaurant walk between shows that day. $35 opening night, $20-$24 all others. www.iontheatre.com.

Correction: The original version of this story said the double bill opens March 13. The opening has since been pushed back.
