An unidentified man celebrated Memorial Day by stabbing to death 55-year-old Andrez Torrez-Aldaba behind a San Ysidro grocery store. The two men, and two others, were there awaiting a regular dumping of expired store product. The two other guys hung around after the knifing and talked to the cops about it, but they said they didn't know the suspected assailant's name.

Obscenely rich super-geek Bill Gates told the nearly 1,500 University of California, San Diego students, who carved out a slice of their day to listen to the guy talk, that technology researchers in the United States are perhaps becoming a bit too complacent as ultra-brainy people in India and China develop new computer technology.

San Diegans who have sued or plan to sue the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego over alleged sexual abuse by priests learned that all pre-trial goings-on will take place in a Los Angeles County court, thanks to a ruling by L.A. County Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle, who thought “coordinating” similar cases from various counties in Southern California is a smart plan-you know, for the sake of efficiency and consistency. A lawyer drumming up new priest-abuse cases in San Diego County predicted that the cases that go to jury trial will do so locally.

San Diego's Affordable Housing Task Force agreed to tell the City Council that it should pass a law prohibiting landlords from evicting people who have been tenants in the same rental for at least two years without giving them a good reason. The proposal aims to protect renters from eviction when landlords want simply to get the old ones out and charge new ones higher rents.

Friday, May 30

A federal grand jury listened to hours of testimony from City Councilmember Ralph Inzunza's office manager, Elena Burton, and one of City Councilmember Charles Lewis' aides, David Cowan, as part of the ongoing City Hall-strip club corruption probe. It was the third time in three weeks the grand jury heard evidence in the case. At the current pace, the matter should be resolved by sometime in 2009.

City Councilmember Charles Lewis proved the new boss ain't the same as the old boss when he introduced masturbation advocate and former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders to a gathering of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered San Diegans. His predecessor, George Stevens, was no friend of the gay community.

Sunday, June 1

It took a local newspaper editor roughly one hour to get off Interstate 5 at Sassafras Street and get back to Washington Street, where the off-ramp was closed, thanks to the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Highly agitated for awhile, the editor gradually came to terms with his situation and realized it was a small sacrifice for a bunch of people who thought it a good idea to run 26.2 miles-without being chased.
