North Coast Repertory Theatre’s Talley’s Folly highlights a sparse week in local theater

By Martin Jones Westlin

It’s always great to see the luscious Amy Biedel, especially when she trots out that drop-dead gorgeous singing voice of hers. With North Coast Repertory Theatre’s current Talley’s Folly, we don’t have that pleasure—and in a roundabout way, maybe that’s the problem here. Matt Friedman (David Ellenstein) and Sally Talley (Biedel) play a befuddled Missouri couple trying to make sense of things amid their secret longings. Ellenstein and Biedel are pretty good together, but playwright Lanford Wilson gives Matt way too obsequious an edge. I’m gonna recommend this, but I didn’t, like, fill my shorts over it or anything. The show runs through Nov. 14 at North Coast Repertory Theatre, 987-D Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach. $37-$47. www.northcoastrep.org.

Now playing

Bent: Persecution by the Nazis is one thing—that the victims are gay is another. Co-produced by Diversionary and Ion theater companies, it runs through Nov. 22 at Diversionary Theatre, 4645 Park Blvd. in University Heights. $29-$33. www.diversionary.org. See our review on this page.

Dog Act: Rozetta Stone fights to protect the art of storytelling in post-Apocalyptic America. Produced by MOXIE Theatre, it runs through Nov. 22 at the Rolando Theatre, 6663 El Cajon Blvd. in the College Area. $20-$25. www.moxietheatre.com.

Sammy: Sammy Davis Jr. didn’t just sing, dance and act; he defined an entertainment era. Through Nov. 8 at The Old Globe Theatre mainstage, 1363 Old Globe Way in Balboa Park. $68-$78. www.oldglobe.org.
