Seasoned greetings

Our annual look at the finer things in San Diego

By David Rolland

“Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn.” That’s what writer Elizabeth Lawrence said about autumn—or at least that’s what one of those famous-quotations websites said she said about autumn.

In any case, we here in San Diego don’t have a whole lot of leaves that turn, and that’s a damn good thing because we ain’t got a whole lot of time to sit around and look at leaves, anyway. We’re too busy watching artists, musicians, dancers and actors do their thing—am I right?

For our annual Fall Arts issue, Seth Combs peeped a thriving new art space in Barrio Logan, Mary Mann stared straight in the face of embarrassment and took part in a break-dancing class, Kelly Davis talked to Bonnie Wright about her Fresh Sound Series at Sushi, Anders Wright got a progress report from the San Diego Asian Film Festival, Martin Jones Westlin previewed Lamb’s Players Theatre’s reprise of a play it took Off-Broadway a decade ago and Eric Wolff spoke to two local authors.

Each feature is followed by a handful of other events happening around town, leaving you free of excuses for not supporting the arts. Creativity is everywhere. Step outside and breathe it in.
