The International Beer Festival at the San Diego County Fair is a two-day celebration of craft beer from around the world—from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 26, and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 27, you can sample your choice of 300 brews from the best breweries locally and beyond, including Bear Republic, Jolly Pumpkin, De Graal and Nøgne-Ø. Advance tickets are $27 for Friday, $37 for Saturday or $64 for a two-day pass, which includes fair admission. The beer-ticket wristband entitles the wearer to unlimited 1-ounce samplings of beer, plus a front row seat for the America’s Strongest Man competition, which will be held in the same location, the Chevrolet Del Mar Arena. www.sdfair.com/beer.
The ninth-annual Taste of Adams Avenue happens from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 28. Walk or ride the complimentary trolley through the neighborhoods of North Park, Normal Heights and Kensington while sampling food from more than 25 area restaurants and food shops, including homemade fruit treats from Viva Pops! and Senor Mango, ice cream from Mariposa and savory tastes from Burger Lounge, Blind Lady Ale House, Jayne’s Gastropub and Kensington Grill. A great partner for summer tomatoes is fresh mozzarella, but an even better match is fresh burrata, mozzarella’s creamier, more decadent cousin. The outside of a sphere of burrata is silky like mozzarella, but its interior is a lush mix of cheese curds and heavy cream, similar to an ultra-rich ricotta. This treat is available on Fridays only at local cheese shops Taste Artisan Cheese (1243 University Ave. in Hillcrest) and Venissimo Cheese (754 W. Washington St. in Mission Hills).
This week in WTF comes from Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill, which has just added a very perplexing and, frankly, unappetizing new taco to its menu: a hamburger patty, melted American cheese, salsa fresca, garlic-chipotle mayo and lettuce, all in a flour tortilla. They call it the All-American Taco. I call it wrong.
