It's harvest season at City College, plus some other foodie-type news you can use

Seeds at City, the new urban farm on the campus of San Diego City College, celebrates its fall harvest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, with a farm tour, cooking demos, food tasting from local restaurants that use local organic produce and gardening activities. The 2-month-old farm, a partnership of City College’s Environmental Stewardship Council and San Diego Roots, is located off of C Street where it intersects with 14th Street. Interested volunteers who don’t mind getting their hands dirty can visit or work in the garden every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m.

Expo Tequila 2008, Mexico’s weeklong tequila extravaganza, ends Sunday, Oct. 19, so there’s still time to head south and pay a mere $6 for unlimited tequila tasting in a closed-off, pedestrian-safe area on Tijuana’s Avenida Revolucion. More than 350 tequilas and other Mexican spirits will be featured, along with food from Baja restaurants and live mariachi music. I recently tasted a 7-year-aged mezcal that was so smooth and delicious, I didn’t even flinch. San Diegans can call Five Star Tours at 619-232-5040 to arrange transportation, or park at the border and take a taxi. Don’t forget your passport! www.expo-tequila.com.

Make a sweet start to your Sunday at Extraordinary Desserts’ new European-buffet breakfast, which includes homemade granola, fresh fruit, smoked salmon, cheeses and fresh-baked breads. Though I’m more a fan of the ice cream than the cakes, I’ve had some good breakfast pastries there, which are also included in the spread. The $16.95 buffet is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday at the Little Italy location, 1430 Union St. Walk-in customers are welcome, but reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 619-294-7001. www.extraordinarydesserts.com.

Ballast Point Brewery celebrates its 12th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 25, with a beer festival—proceeds benefit YMCA’s Youth & Family Services and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. In addition to Ballast Point beer, other fine local breweries, like Alpine Brewing Co., Pizza Port/Port Brewing, Green Flash Brewing Co. and Coronado Brewing Co., will offer beers for tasting. Tickets for the festival, held at Liberty Station North Promenade from 1 to 5 p.m., cost $35 in advance and include 10 four-ounce tasters. For more info call 858-695-2739. www.ballastpoint.com.
