When all you want to do is dance

Here's where to go

By Justin Roberts

On June 22, Kava Lounge (2812 Kettner Blvd.) welcomes back Thunderball and Fort Knox Five-two of the swankiest groups from Washington, D.C.'s electro-funk label, Eighteenth Street Lounge-for this month's installment of “3 Tha Hard Way.” Expect more of the bass-heavy breakbeat, dub and dancehall we saw from the Chocolate City Hustlers' last visit. With any luck we'll all be sweating from the same primal heat Kava Lounge generated during the Bassnectar/ Daedelus show a couple weeks ago. That night was the closest to a Tijuana-style party I've experienced in San Diego.

The second installment of Drop Dead Gorgeous-the seven-month-long "unconventiona"l beauty pageant taking place the last Sunday of every month at Beauty Bar (4746 El Cajon Blvd.)-kicks off on June 24. Emcee Brandon Welchez from The Prayers and host May*Star from Fashion Whore will lead this hipster beau monde event with Buddy Akai's DJ Rotny at the decks and a slew of local music celebs judging the contestants. Get there early to enjoy an hour of free booze from the Pink Vodka-hosted bar.

On June 29, prepare yourself for what may well become the largest Kimika-produced event to happen in 2007: the progressive house DJ duo known as Deep Dish are spinning a massive party at Mexitlan (Benito Juarez between 2nd and 3rd, Zona Centro, Tijuana). Rumor has it they've set the maximum capacity for this event at a staggering 15,000 people, which means it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing the sun rise over the Mexican skyline. If one night of partying with Deep Dish just isn't enough, follow the boys up the coast that morning to Los Angeles for the Electric Daisy Carnival, where they'll be playing with Oakenfold, Hernan Cattaneo, Sandra Collins and Mark Farina, to name a few. July 1 has now been designated a "National Day of Rest"-you're gonna need it.
