When all you want to do is dance

This week in clubs

By Justin Roberts

On Oct. 22, Kava Lounge (2812 Kettner Blvd.) will host a night of German nu-jazz and jazz-house with Alex Barck from the chilled-out DJ collective Jazzanova and Roland Appel, a member of the Studio !K7 family whose most recent release came out on Kruder & Dorfmeister’s G-Stone Recordings label. Local DJs Saul Q and Sergio will open.

Oct. 26 kicks off the Halloween festivities with three super-scary soirées to choose from. First off is Noche Macabrona at Tia Juana Tilly’s (Calle 7 and Ave. Revolución in Tijuana), a costume party presented by the Tijuana Dancefloor Mafia, featuring San Diego’s machine-funk DJs Dr. Indulgent and Alex Villalobos along with the electro stylings of Memo Rex (from local band Buddy Akai) and many others. That same night, Static Lounge (634 Broadway) will host Club Pop Noir’s 18-and-up Halloween party with the electro/indie/nu-rave sounds of DJs Groundfloor and Edgartronic, and a fashion show featuring designs by Cornfed and Luigi Vera. Finally, Kava Lounge serves up a delicious helping of brains for 3 Tha Hard Way’s Zombie Party presented by RE:UP magazine and featuring DJs Atom Matter, Jon Wesley and resident DJ duo Frik n Frak. Dub, hip-hop, house, breaks, electro, whatever—the 3THW boys play it all. Not only will dressing up like a zombie earn you the respect of your peers and hipster cred (it’s ironic, OK?), you might also win one of several prizes being given away by RE:UP that night.

On Halloween night (Oct. 31), party it up at Beauty Bar (4746 El Cajon Blvd.) with local DJs Corey Biggs, Adam Salter, Gabe Vega and Saul Q, who open for local indie band The Book of Martyrs. Or, if rock isn’t your scene this Halloween, shake it on down to Tijuana for Freak, presented by Kimika, at the new Zokalo Ultra Lounge (Ave. Paseo Tijuana Esquina and Javier Villaurrutia). U.K.-based James Zabiela will spin his synth-centric house breakbeats. As a wise man’s sweaty T-shirt once told me on the dance floor, “Rock off, Rave on!”
