Music at The San Diego Sports Club has come to a halt, at least temporarily. The club has received noise complaints in the past, and had recently begun asking chatty smokers to stop congregating in the club's parking lot. But now the club has in hand a cease-and-desist order from the city. Manager Tony Vee called the situation "a nightmare." All events at the club have been canceled until at least May 30. This makes those condos going up across the street from The Casbah just a tad bit scarier.
Steve Poltz has wrapped up work on his next album, Traveling and Unraveling. Set for release this summer on his own label, the final CD will have only 12 tracks. However, 22 songs were recorded, including several written with A.J. Croce. Poltz plans to slap those extras on a second disc and hawk copies at his shows. www.myspace.com/stevepoltz.

Death hit San Diego's music community hard last month. On April 22, saxophonist Don Peck died of cancer. Peck played with numerous local bands over the decades including The King Biscuit Blues Band, as well as touring with Loretta Lynn and '60s pop band The Fortunes. On April 25, singer-songwriter Laurie Burke Shields also passed. Shields did session work and released several albums, winning a National Parenting Publications Award (NAPPA) in 1998 for children's music in the "Lullabies" category. Finally, Gary Lofton, frontman for Imperial Beach punk rockers The Resentments, died on April 21 of a heart attack. The band plans to continue with a show on May 26 at the Jumping Turtle. www.myspace.com/theresentmentsib.
