Upcoming food and beer festivals, new menu items and more

To coincide with the Korean Thanksgiving holiday, or harvest celebration, called Chu’sok, local Korean restaurants, including Noodle Town, Tofu House and Arirang House are participating in San Diego Korean Food Week, from Sept. 12 through Sept. 20, which will feature various dishes at special discounted prices each day. Korea House, for instance, will be offering their galbi (marinated short ribs) and bibimbap (rice with chili paste and veggies). Usually $8.95 and $7.99 at lunch, the dishes will now be $5.99 and $4.99, respectively. For more restaurants and details at www.koreanfoodweek.com.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of under-appreciated cuts of meat. The meat maestros at The Linkery have added a new “bits and pieces” section to their menu and the first round of dishes includes grilled terrine of calf’s tongue and beef cheek, spicy deviled lamb’s kidneys and tripe with house-made chorizo. I’m sure there will be much more creative offal-ing in the future. www.thelinkery.com.

Get your tickets now for the 14th annual San Diego Festival of Beer, coming up on Friday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. A few Downtown streets near Columbia and B will blocked off for the fest, which will feature more than 150 microbrews, food, wine and live music. Advance tickets are $25 and include 10 four-ounce beer tastings, with extra tasting coupons purchasable inside. The 5 Star parking garage on Columbia is offering a discounted rate of $5, but save a five-spot and be safer by riding the trolley. Proceeds benefit the non-profit group San Diego Professionals Against Cancer. www.sdbeerfest.org.

If you can’t make the festival, have you own at-home beer fiesta. Located on Convoy Street, Mesa Liquor’s selection is pretty considerable and diverse. There’s a section devoted mainly to Belgian imports, from Cantillons to Fantomes, while another area has rows of micros made in the states and abroad. There are locals Lost Abbey and Lightning, plus Rogue, Russian River and Unibroue from points north. Although their storage conditions aren’t optimal, it’s often hot in the shop, which can’t be good for the precious bottles, but I’ve yet to open a stinker. And Chris, the store’s resident beer curator, can steer you towards the better, fresher stuff. 4919 Convoy St., Kearny Mesa, 858-279-5292.

For anyone who, like me, hasn’t made it up to the Liar’s Club’s new location in Alpine but is craving their righteous Fuego Melt (steak, pepper jack, roasted chilies and chipotle aioli on grilled jalapeno cheese bread), Hamilton’s Tavern has added a closer-to-home approximation of the spicy deliciousness to their menu. The Witch Fire burger is a Brandt Beef patty smothered with grilled onions, three different peppers, provolone and sriracha mayo. 1521 30th St., South Park. www.hamiltonstavern.com.
