Freddie McGregor

CD review: Anything for You

By Troy Johnson
You would think, in a genre of music that focuses on grooving its way towards a higher power, that the wisdom of age would increase the power of the music. One listen to Steel Pulse's recent output shows otherwise-age hasn't done many well, save for a few like Burning Spear and Freddie McGregor. The 46-year-old McGregor has been singing since age 7, when he joined the Clarendonians (who, for a spell, were more popular than Bob). Though his rich, smooth voice has always been phenomenal, his early compositions were commonplace. The millennium was good for him, though. Starting with 2000's Signature and continuing with this year's Anything for You, McGregor has become a lovers rock and roots reggae force to be reckoned with.
