“Keeping it real” has always been an important ethic in hip-hop. Many rappers have lost touch with this principle, with rhymes that appeal to the Cristal-swiggin', white-collar jetset. The L.A.-based Living Legends, on the other hand, have established themselves as mainstays in the DIY, underground hip-hop movement. Formed in 1996, the collective consists of such notable MCs as Aesop, the Grouch, Eligh, MURS and the Mystik Journeymen. Mad respect to anyone who can run their own record label (LLCrew), magazine (Unsigned and Hella Broke) and Web site (www.llcrew.com) yet still find time to do eight world tours and make a tour documentary. That's real.
