In the mid-90s, Colorado jam band icons String Cheese Incident were part of a movement led by mandolin player Sam Bush's Newgrass Revival, which helped bring bluegrass down from its hillbilly hideout and into more visible cultural circles. Percussion and a rockin' sound gave bluegrass new relevance to younger audiences not raised in the backwoods. SCI take this progression a step further, incorporating pyschedelia, cajun, reggae and funky jazz into their barefoot-stompin' live show. Let's be honest: how many bands can rock San Francisco's Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on New Year's Eve with mandolin-driven leads? For that matter, how many bands are followed by a legion of hoola-hooping fans?
