Angelique Kidjo

The Benin-born Angelique Kidjo is a different sort of Afro-powerhouse

By Troy Johnson
With Femi Kuti's stateside success, the son of Afropop legend Fela Kuti brought his father's African social protest back into light. The Benin-born Angelique Kidjo is a different sort of Afro-powerhouse, but still bears the tricks of the country's musical trade (Zairean rumba, makossa, zouk, etc.). Unwilling to play the role of token ethnic experience for culturally calculating Americans, she mixes a healthy love of James Brown and Aretha Franklin with samba, jazz, gospel, Afro-funk, reggae, and hundreds of unnamed genres. Kidjo possesses her own raving talent for songbirding, but she also appreciates the VIP ride to success, collaborating with Cassandra Wilson, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis, and her husband, Jean Hebrail, a French bass player and composer who's helped guide her evolution.
