To all the conservative, gentrificating residents in the Gaslamp who have forced the closing of the Juke Joint Café: CityBeat would like to send you a big, healthy middle finger. For those not in the know: the contingent that moved into the adjacent building has forced out the jazz and blues club after a series of noise complaints. The kicker? The residents signed an agreement when they moved in stating they lived in an “entertainment district” and that noise was a part of the deal. Now that they've moved in, they want to change it into a placid little burg like Poway. The San Diego Beat Organization played a “going out” party at the Joint on Oct. 15. The place closes later this month.

In “it's about frickin' time they recognized” news... after their tour with longtime pals Jimmy Eat World, the music world is beginning to embrace local rockers No Knife. The band is No. 1 on commercial specialty charts right now, according to R&R and HITS trade publications. The taste-making hepcat clothing institution, Urban Outfitters, has just added No Knife to their nationwide rotation.

The adulation is in no small part thanks to JEW's lead vocalist, Jim Atkins, who expressed his love for No Knife onstage nightly, and regularly played No Knife's songs when doing radio appearances across the nation. After the tour, four major labels flew out from New York to see No Knife and make them offers, but guitarist Ryan Ferguson has politely deferred: “The response to our record has been incredible,” he said. “We appreciate all the support from radio, press and most importantly, our fans (new and old). The interest from majors is exciting...but it'll be hard for a major to give us the support, attention and love that Better Looking [Records] has showed us.”

Possibly the best compliment came in the standard rock 'n' roll imbibement: booze. Jimmy Eat World gave No Knife a muy expensive bottle of champagne at the end of the tour to say ‘thanks' for touring with them.

Last Saturday night, Black Heart Procession and Ilya performed a sold-out show at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. Label reps were there to check out out Ilya, whose star is quickly rising.

Rocket from the Crypt, who just released their new album, Live from Camp X-Ray, will perform on the “Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn” on October 28.

Eve Selis, whose music is being described by the timid Nashville music scene as "thunder twang," has broken the one million mark for downloads on MP3.com. Out of the more than 200,000 artists on MP3.com, only a handful have reached this level of success. She recently had her 12th No. 1 hit there as well, with her newest single "Do You Know Me" topping the Adult Contemporary chart within a week of its release.

After being featured in a 3 page spread in the Union-Tribune Arts section a few weeks ago, Selis drew almost 700 fans to her CD-release party at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.
