Support artisans and small retailers at these nontraditional shopping events

By Kelly Davis
gg-events Mercado Golondrina

Green Flash Grand Holiday Marketplace: From 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, Green Flash Brewing (655 Mira Mesa Blvd.) will celebrate the release of its winter Grand Cru amid “a carefully curated selection” of goods from more than 20 local vendors, including jewelry, toys, artisanal food items, stuff for craft-beer lovers and more.

Mercado Golondrina Holiday Shopping Event: The traveling urban arts market will bring more than 15 vendors to The Spot (1835 Main St. in Barrio Logan) from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6. Find items ranging from silkscreened T-shirts to jewelry to bath and body products. There’ll be music, food and raffles of limited-edition ornaments created by local artists.

Friday Night Liberty, Holiday Edition: From 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, the monthly event will get festive with special discounts at Liberty Station retailers. Carolers will stroll the grounds, and art galleries and food shops will be open, too.

Huge Frocking Sale: Frock You (4121 Park Blvd. in University Heights) holds the holiday edition of its vintage market from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, through Sunday, Dec. 9. It’s also the place to go for an ugly Christmas sweater.

Rummage Art Show: Shop for art and handmade crafts at Bamboo Lounge (1475 University Ave. in Hillcrest) from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. Vendors include My Lucky Dragon (bath and body), Ms. Formaldehyde ( jewelry and hair accessories), Indigo pomegranate (retro jewelry) and Effie Shop (hand-knitted items).

Holiday Craft Bar-Zaar: Bar Pink’s (3829 30th St. in North Park) annual event’s always a good one. Vendors set up shop in the bar’s booths; you get to browse while sipping cocktails. From 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.

Holidays on Cedros: Take advantage of specials at Cedros Avenue retailers from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Make sure to stop at Re-Gallery (348 S. Cedros Ave.), which will sell gifts made from repurposed / recycled materials and set up a craft table where you can make some gifts of your own.

International Holiday Bazaar: Refugee-owned businesses set up shop at the City Heights Farmers Market (on Wightman Street near Fairmount Avenue) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, for this annual event. Find handcrafted decorative items, jewelry, clothing and more.

Say Lula Holiday Trunk Show: The salon’s been in its new location at 811 W. Washington St. in Mission Hills for a little more than six months. Stop by from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, for a holiday party and trunk show featuring local vendors and artisans.

Taste ’N’ Tinis: The annual Hillcrest event includes bites from local restaurants and—at more than a dozen retail stores, like Cathedral and The Village Hat Shop—specialty martinis that you can sip while shopping. Tickets are $20 presale, $25 day-of. From 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.

Urban Emporium Pop-up Marketplace: On Friday, Dec. 14, the Back Room at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Blvd., Suite 110, Little Italy) will transform into a market where you can shop for artisanal food items, handmade goods and more from 6 to 11 p.m.

Peace Bazaar: More than two-dozen community groups and nonprofits will take over the Mid-City Gym (4302 Landis St. in City Heights) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Your purchases help support groups like Alliance for African Assistance, Heifer International and San Diego Roots Sustainable Project.

Holiday Gift Market: Shop for handcrafted goods by local artists and records and merch from musicians like Joel P West, A New Normal and Meg & Bryan at The Cider Cellar (906 10th Ave., Downtown). There’ll also be a hot-toddy bar and a Christmas choir performance. From 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.
