Next time you visit the land of the Pala Band of Mission Indians, tune into Pala Rez Radio 91.3-FM, a low-power radio station that’s run by the North County tribe.
Along with news broadcasts, fire reports and live coverage of the reservation’s annual powwow, the station is the new home to Brunch with Bob and Friends, the popular reggae show that used to run on FM 94/9 every Sunday. Host Tommy Hough took it off the air in June when the struggling station moved it to an earlier timeslot.
Hough’s been busy lately. He told CityBeat he recently took a job at Oregon Wild, an environmental organization based in Portland, and he’s launching a craft-beer-focused podcast in September called High Octane Growler. He’ll do both shows in his home studio, and he’s currently looking for underwriters for Brunch with Bob.
Brunch with Bob runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Sundays. The station’s signal doesn’t extend far past the Pala reservation, but it’s available as a web stream and at online streaming service IHeartRadio. Head to palatribe.com/pala-radio.
Two students at UCSD are working on a new record label and music collective, Flower Sun Rain. Run by Mary Manogue and Kenny Katayama, general manager of the university’s KSDT radio station, the label promotes upbeat, noisy music and recently released a single by Toronto electro-rockers Other Families. One of the city’s best-known goth nights is moving to a new location. After six-and-a-half years at The Flame, Club Sabbat will now be held every second, fourth and fifth Saturday at Numbers Night Club, just across the street at 3811 Park Blvd.
