Michael Boshart’s ‘Neat’ bartender portraits

Drink-slinger images will be on view in Barrio Logan

Michael Boshart is not a photorealist painter; he connects with his subjects, and their emotions, in what he calls a “selective recreation” of his initial drawing, or photograph, of the person. The resulting oil-on-canvas paintings pit creativity and accuracy against one another. Boshart’s latest body of work takes 18 local bartenders away from their workplaces and depicts them in portrait-like representations that will be on display at the upcoming show Neat, opening from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Bosh Studio and Gallery in Barrio Logan (1878 Main St.).

“I wanted to take the bartenders out of their environments,” says Boshart, adding that he was inspired by each of his subjects’ personal style. “Some of them have to dress a certain way at work, and I wanted to paint them as themselves.”

Fourteen paintings will be on view, as well as six of Boshart’s drawings of the bartenders, including Craft & Commerce’s Christian Siglin, Analog’s Aaron Thompson and El Dorado’s Miranda Marks.
