A helpful international list for before and after


For you drinking travelers, here’s a handy guide to toasting around the world. After you’ve said “Cheers!” in nine different languages, you’ll probably need a cure for a wicked hangover. Luckily, those countries also have some interesting remedies for your maladies.

Toast: Salud
Cure: Menudo is the go-to cure for hung-over Mexicans. The soup—tripe strips swimming in tomato broth—contains tons of B vitamins.

Toast: Cheers
Cure: Brits eat the pain of a hangover away with a full English brekkie. That’s fried eggs, bacon, sausage, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, toast, baked beans and black pudding, which has blood in it.

Toast: Kanpai
Cure: Umeboshi, or pickled plums, aid Japanese folks after a night of too much sake.

Toast: Noroc
Cure: Romanians feast on Clorba de Burta soup loaded with tripe, vinegar, garlic, hot peppers and sour cream after a night out.

Toast: Na zdorovye
Cure: In Russia, vodka doesn’t make you sweat. You sweat out the vodka in a sauna.

Toast: Erüül mendiin tölöö
Cure: Mongolians don’t use eye of the tiger to power through hangovers. They eat boiled sheep’s eyes.

Toast: Prost
Cure: Post Oktoberfest, you’ll find Germans downing tons of pickled herring.

Toast: Mabuhay
Cure: In the Philippines, duck embryos called balut seem to do the trick. Try not to choke on the tiny beak.

Toast: A la sature
Cure: Coconut water is all the rage nowadays. But Indians have been curing hangovers with it long before drunken Americans were.
